COVID-19 Solano County update: 9 new cases, very few new tests

Thursday, April 30: 9 new cases, no new deaths, total now 263 cases, 5 deaths

Summary

Solano County reported 9 NEW POSITIVE CASES today – total is now 263.  No new deaths, total remains at 5.

BY AGE GROUP

  • No new cases of young persons under 19 years of age, total of 5 cases, just under 2% of the 263 confirmed cases.
  • 7 of today’s new cases were persons 19-64 years of age, total of 206 cases, 78%, of the total.   No new deaths, total of 2.  Note that only 29 of the 206 cases in this age group (14%) were hospitalized at one time.  (It is unclear whether the 2 deaths were ever hospitalized.)
  • 2 of today’s new cases were persons 65 or older, total of 52 cases, 20% of the total.  No new deaths, total of 3.  Note that 21 of the 52 cases in this age group (40%, nearly half) were hospitalized at one time.  (It is unclear whether the 3 deaths were ever hospitalized.)

HOSPITALIZATIONS: 51 of Solano’s 263 cases resulted in hospitalizations, same as yesterday.  Good news – no increase in hospitalizations!

ACTIVE CASES:  55 of the 263 are active cases, again same as in yesterday’s report.  Maybe the spread is leveling off, but don’t forget – there are 55 of us struggling with the virus here today, and presumably contagious.  The county does not report WHERE the active cases are.  Below you will see that only 12 are currently hospitalized, which leaves 43 of these 55 active cases out in our communities somewhere, and hopefully quarantined.

The County’s “Hospital Impact” graph (below) is virtually the same as yesterday and the day before.  12 of the 51 hospitalized cases are currently hospitalized.  And still only 12 of the 55 active cases are currently hospitalized.  The County’s count of ICU beds available and ventilator supply remains at “GOOD” at 31-100%. (No information is given on our supply of test kits, PPE and staff.)

CITY DATA

  • Vallejo added 5 of today’s 9 new cases, total of 122.
  • Fairfield added 4 of today’s 9 new cases, total of 60.
  • Vacaville remains at 35.
  • Suisun City remains at 16.
  • Benicia remains at 14.
  • Dixon, Rio Vista and “Unincorporated” are still not assigned numerical data: today all remain at <10 (less than 10).  Note that the numbers for other cities add up to 247, leaving 16 cases located somewhere among the locations in this category.  Residents and city officials have pressured County officials for city case counts.  Today’s data is welcome, but still incomplete.

TESTING

The County reports that 3,713 residents have been tested as of today.  This is an increase of only 37 individuals since yesterday’s total of 3,676.  So today we added only 37 and yesterday only 106, after days when the County reported 505 and 438 new tests.  Why the significant drop?  Testing should be on the increase!  We have a long way to go: only 8 tenths of 1% of Solano County’s 447,643 residents (2019) have been tested.

COVID-19 – Solano County surge in positive cases, big increase in testing

Tuesday, April 28: 23 new cases, no new deaths, total now 249 cases, 4 deaths

Summary

Solano County reported 23 NEW POSITIVE CASES today – total is now 249.  No new deaths, total now at 4.

BY AGE GROUP

  • No new cases of young persons under 19 years of age, total of 5 cases, 2% of total confirmed cases.
  • 12 of the new cases were persons 19-64 years of age, total of 194 cases, 78%, of the total.   No new deaths, total of 2.  Note that 29 of the 194 cases (15%) were hospitalized at one time.
  • 11 of the new cases were persons 65 or older, total of 50 cases, 20% of the total, an increase of 3% over yesterday.  No new deaths, total of 2.  Note that 21 of the 50 cases (42%) were hospitalized at one time.

HOSPITALIZATIONS: 51 of Solano’s 249 cases resulted in hospitalizations, same as yesterday.  Good news – no increase in hospitalizations!

  • Dixon, Rio Vista and “Unincorporated” are still not assigned numerical data: today all remain at <10 (less than 10).  Residents and city officials have been pressuring County officials for city case counts for many weeks.  Today’s data is welcome, but still incomplete.

TESTING

The County reports that 3,570 residents have been tested as of today.  This is an increase of 505 individuals tested since yesterday’s total of 3,065.  THIS IS AN IMPROVEMENT!  A week ago, around 150 new tests were reported daily.  The numbers dropped to well under 50 per day all last week.  So something has allowed the County to ramp up testing this week.  We have a long way to go, though.  Only about 8 tenths of 1% of Solano County’s 447,643 residents (2019) have been tested.

Summary

Solano County reported 27 NEW POSITIVE CASES over 3 days since last Friday – total is now 226.  No new deaths, total now at 4.

OVER THE WEEKEND:

  • 21 new cases were reported on Saturday 4/18
  • 3 new cases were reported on Sunday 4/19
  • 3 new cases were reported today, Monday 4/20

BY AGE GROUP

  • 1 new positive case was a young person under 19 years of age, total of 5 cases, 2% of total confirmed cases.
  • 17 of the new cases were persons 19-64 years of age, total of 182 cases, 81%, of the total.   No new deaths, total of 2.
  • 9 of the new cases were persons 65 or older, total of 39 cases, 17% of the total (an increase of 2% over previous report).  No new deaths, total of 2.

HOSPITALIZATIONS: 51 of Solano’s 226 cases resulted in hospitalizations (1 more than previous report).

ACTIVE CASES:  44 of the 226 are active cases (22 more than previous report).

The County’s “Hospital Impact” graph (below) shows that only 9 of the 51 hospitalized cases are currently hospitalized, 2 less than previously reported.  Note also that only 9 of the 44 active cases are currently hospitalized.  The County’s count of ICU beds available returned to “GOOD” and ventilator supply continues “GOOD” at 31-100%. (No information is given on our supply of test kits, PPE and staff.)

CITY DATA

  • Vallejo added 11 of today’s 27 new cases, total of 96.
  • Fairfield added 5 of today’s 27 new cases, 53 cases.
  • Vacaville added 6 of today’s 27 new cases, total of 34.
  • Suisun City added 4 of today’s 27 new cases, total of 15 cases.
  • Benicia remains at 12 cases.
  • Dixon, Rio Vista and “Unincorporated” are still not assigned numerical data: today all remain at <10 (less than 10).  1 new case unaccounted for above would have come from one of these jurisdictions.  Residents and city officials have been pressuring County officials for city case counts for many weeks.  Today’s data is welcome, but still incomplete.

TESTING

The County reports that 3,065 residents have been tested as of today.  This is an increase of 438 individuals tested since Friday’s total of 2,627.  THIS IS AN IMPROVEMENT!  A week ago, around 150 new tests were reported daily.  The numbers dropped to well under 50 per day all last week.  So something has ramped up over the weekend.  We have a long way to go, though.  Under 7 tenths of 1% of Solano County’s 447,643 residents (2019) have been tested.

The blue bars in the chart, “Daily number of cases on the date that specimens were collected” shows why the County is interpreting a flattening of the curve.  Note that the daily date in that chart refers to the date a sample was drawn and so reflects the lag time in testing.

Yesterday’s report, Thursday, April 23

Summary

Solano County reported 8 NEW POSITIVE CASES today – total is now 199.  No new deaths, total now at 4.  As of today:

BY AGE GROUP

  • 1 new positive case of a young person under 19 years of age, total of 4 cases, 2% of total confirmed cases.
  • 7 of the new cases were persons 19-64 years of age, total of 165 cases, 83%, of the total.   No new deaths, total of 2.
  • No new cases of persons 65 or older, total of 30 cases, 15% of the total.  No new deaths, total of 2.

HOSPITALIZATIONS: 50 of Solano’s 199 cases resulted in hospitalizations (1 more than yesterday).

ACTIVE CASES:  22 of the 199 are active cases. This is 5 more than yesterday.

The County’s “Hospital Impact” graph (below) shows that only 11 of the 50 hospitalized cases are currently hospitalized, 2 more than yesterday.  Note also that only 11 of the 22 active cases are currently hospitalized.  The County’s count of ICU beds available remained below 30% for the second time today, “MODERATE.”  Ventilator supply continues at 31-100%, or “GOOD. ” (No information is given on our supply of test kits, PPE and staff.)

CITY DATA

  • Vallejo added 5 of today’s 8 new cases, total of 85.
  • Fairfield added 1 of today’s 8 new cases, 48 cases.
  • Vacaville added 2 of today’s 8 new cases, total of 28.
  • Suisun City remains at 11 cases.
  • Benicia remains at 12 cases.
  • Dixon, Rio Vista and “Unincorporated” are still not assigned numerical data: today all remain at <10 (less than 10).  Residents and city officials have been pressuring County officials for city case counts for many weeks.  Today’s data is welcome, but still incomplete.

TESTING

The County reports that 2,627 residents have been tested as of today.  This is an increase of only 43 tested since yesterday’s total of 2,584 .  THIS IS NOT ENOUGH TESTING!  Other California counties are expanding testing with multiple drive-through testing locations.  Is Solano not planning to expand?  Last week, around 150 new tests were reported daily, but the numbers dropped over the weekend and since.  (I have no information as to the reason for the slow pace of testing in Solano County – inadequate supply of kits, perhaps?)  Under 6 tenths of 1% of Solano County’s 447,643 residents (2019) have been tested.
