Automatic license plate readers like Flock aren’t your standard traffic cameras

Automatic license plate readers like Flock aren’t your standard traffic cameras; they create digital “fingerprints” of vehicles and upload the information into an AI-powered database. And, following reports of misuse and potential ties to immigration enforcement, anti-surveillance groups have cropped up across the country. “I like to equate it to a police officer following you around every time you get in your car,” said Tobias Halpern, California Polytechnic State University student. Halpern is the founder of DeFlock SLO, which successfully pushed for the removal of 17 cameras on campus.
