Benicia Employee Tests Positive for COVID-19; Community Center Closed

Benicia Employee Tests Positive for COVID-19;
Community Center Closed

Benicia, CA (July 20, 2020) – The City of Benicia shares the news that an employee at the Benicia Community Center informed the City of Benicia today that they received a positive test result for COVID-19. The City of Benicia has been in contact with Solano County Public Health Office and is following and exceeding their guidance. In an abundance of caution, the City of Benicia has decided to close the Benicia Community Center effective tomorrow, Tuesday, July 21 to begin a deep cleaning of the entire facility. Staff will be tested, and the Community Center will remain closed until it is deemed safe to reopen. Credits will be issued for all Parks & Community Services program registrations affected by the closure.

“We make it a policy not to disclose detailed information to protect employee privacy,” said City Manager Lorie Tinfow. “We will facilitate testing for all employees who may have been exposed and notify program participants as appropriate. The City of Benicia is committed to maintain the safety of our staff, our visitors and our program participants to the best of our ability.”

Increased instances of positive test results have been seen in Solano County, in the State of California and in our country. Employees of the City of Benicia, including those who work at the Benicia Community Center, follow recommended protocols such as wearing face coverings, washing hands, and maintaining social distance. A significant number of positive cases stem from social and family gatherings. The City of Benicia reminds all residents to follow recommended protocols and avoid gatherings.

Clear statement on COVID-19 business closures and restrictions in Benicia

On Monday, July 13, 2020, Governor Newsom announced the following changes to business operations in Solano County:

NO Indoor Operations Allowed

▪ Restaurants
▪ Wineries
▪ Movie theaters
▪ Family entertainment centers like bowling alleys, miniature golf, batting cages, and arcades
▪ Zoos
▪ Museums
▪ Cardrooms
▪ Fitness centers & gyms
▪ Places of worship
▪ Offices for non-essential services (see State-defined list of business sectors)
▪ Personal care services like nail salons, body waxing, and tattoo parlors
▪ Hair salons and barbershops
▪ Malls (other types of stand-alone retail may remain open following protocols)

These industries MAY continue to operate outside or for pick-up only (as applicable).

No Operations—Indoor or Outdoor—Allowed

▪ Individual Bars, Breweries, Brewpubs, Pubs
Bars, breweries, brewpubs, and pubs MAY continue to serve alcohol ONLY if it is in a sit-down, outdoor setting with food ordered and served in the same transaction.

County data monitoring

California is monitoring COVID-19 closely in each local community and keeping the public informed. We’re teaming up with counties to fight it with every tool we have: current local data, testing, contact tracing, infection control, emergency supplies, containment measures, and more.

Counties should be ready to restore limitations if outbreaks increase. The State Public Health Officer may take action if needed.

Effective July 13, 2020,  ALL counties  must close indoor operations in these sectors:
    • Dine-in restaurants
    • Wineries and tasting rooms
    • Movie theaters
    • Family entertainment centers (for example: bowling alleys, miniature golf, batting cages and arcades)
    • Zoos and museums
    • Cardrooms

Additionally, bars, brewpubs, breweries, and pubs must close all operations both indoor and outdoor statewide, unless they are offering sit-down, outdoor dine-in meals. Alcohol can only be sold in the same transaction as a meal.

 Counties that have remained on the County Monitoring List  for 3 consecutive days will be required to shut down the following industries or activities unless they can be modified to operate outside or by pick-up.

Face coverings is NOT A POLITICAL ISSUE – it’s for your safety and mine, and for STOPPING the pandemic.

But I see way too many people in public places not wearing face masks.  Yes, right here in Benicia.

On June 16, the Benicia City Council passed Resolution No. 20-78, A Resolution of The City Council Of The City Of Benicia Requiring the Use of Face Coverings in Indoor and Enclosed Public Spaces.  Two days later, the California Department of Public Health issued its mandatory “Guidance For the Use of Face Coverings.”

Both documents spell out circumstances and situations in which face coverings are required, as well as exceptions to the orders.  Today might be a good time to review both, and be prepared when you go out.

Be aware – as of yesterday, we had 409 positive cases of the virus in Solano County, including 40 here in Benicia.  It’s here among us, and it’s incredibly contagious.

I know… we’re all tired of the social distancing and the masks, but we need to maintain our focus to beat this thing.  Let’s all keep our politics – and our aerosol emissions – to ourselves.
