Trump on DEI – he is promoting white Christian Nationalism

(From BenIndy contributor Roger Straw: Professor Eddie Glaude is a favorite author and one of my heros. His clarity on issues of U.S. history and culture and the reality of longstanding and pervasive racism in the U.S. is inspiring and challenging – and dead on righteous and true. Listen to his recent interview…and note my transcription below.)

White nationalist agenda: Professor slams Trump’s racist, sexist DEI comments

Chris Jansing Reports, MSNBC on YouTube: Professor Eddie Glaude interview 31 Jan 2025

Partial transcript, by Roger Straw, Benicia Independent, Professor Eddie Glaude on 31 Jan 2025:

1:24
It’s important for us to take Donald Trump at his word. There is no evidence to suggest that diversity had anything to do with the loss of 67 people. And what you see, in no uncertain terms, is the way DEI is being used for a white Christian Nationalist agenda. This had nothing to do with merit. This has everything to do, to my mind – because yesterday revealed it – because there’s no evidence to correlate these two considerations. He’s not interested in merit. The assumption is, that if you have women, if you have black people or brown people, if you have a diverse workforce, that by definition, the standards have been compromised. That is a racist, a sexist view.

So what does it mean, Chris, that people are taking this seriously? If we understand it for what it is, an item in a white Christian Nationalist agenda, and you see businesses and government following suit, what are we to conclude? So I think yesterday was quite revealing, and the policies and the decisions that are being made now are as revealing as well.

3:08
I mean, how many McKinsey reports do we have to cite about the value and the power of a diverse workforce? Of a diverse leadership team? So we know that’s the truth. We know that’s to be the case. So what we’re seeing here, or witnessing here, is the capitulation to a white Nationalist agenda. And I want to stop dancing around this, Chris. We need to understand what we are confronting. We need to understand what the tattoos mean on Pete Hegseth. We need to understand what this particular decision is actually revealing. CRT, DEI, ‘woke’ – all of this is aimed at cultivating and stoking white grievance. And if we keep dancing around it, and keep capitulating to it, we’re going to find ourselves, shall we say, harkening back to the days where people like me supposedly knew our place – and people like you, Chris.

6:04
We have to be clear about our values. We have to be clear about who we believe ourselves to be. What is the nature of the America that he’s putting forward? What does it mean that for a large number of our fellows, that we have to endure this sort of view? Right? And what are its implications for the very way in which this country goes about its business? I mean, we are barreling towards the 250th anniversary of the nation. And here we are, grappling with the contradiction that has haunted this place since its founding. We have a president who believes that this country must be a white nation in the vein of old Europe. He talks about immigration, Chris, but we know birthright citizenship has nothing to do with the “crisis at the border” (quote unquote). It has everything to do with great replacement theory. We have to start being honest with what’s in front of us. Because if we’re not being honest, we’re being complicit. And so we’ve got to get clear about the values that animate the very country we claim to be so committed to.

Breaking News: Elon Musk has bought the North Pole and installed himself as Santa

A Nerd Reich holiday reading

By Gil Duran, The Nerd Reich, 23 Dec 2024

Breaking News: Elon Musk has bought the North Pole and installed himself as Santa.
A few weeks ago, I wrote about “President Musk” and his current effort to take over the US government. In recent days, #PresidentMusk has been trending on social media – not because of anything I’ve written, but because Musk has gone out of his way to make it crystal clear that he sees himself as the real president.

Donald Trump has even been forced to address the issue, assuring his supporters that Musk can never be president because he was born in South Africa. So, all this talk of President Musk is reaching Trump’s ears – and getting on Trump’s nerves.

Musk has lots of money, but very little self control. He needs to be the center of attention, all day, every day. But Trump has the same obsessive need to dominate, so I expect fireworks ahead. I’ll have more to say on that, soon.

Covering President Musk

Speak of the Devil: Journalist Jennifer Schulze interviewed me on the subject of how reporters should cover Musk. From the interview:

Musk has a talent for turning everything into a joke or a meme, but he is a fountain of disinformation and propaganda, and his plans are deadly serious. If journalism wishes to survive, it must evolve to cover these kinds of threats. Musk can no longer be covered as an eccentric tech CEO, and it’s unethical to give a known propagandist the benefit of the doubt.  To cover him accurately and honestly, he must be treated as an existential threat to democracy, free speech and truth. Because that’s what he is.

One of the biggest mistakes the press makes is forgetting that Musk is an enemy of free speech. He pretends to be a champion, and they repeat his false claim like fools. But the first thing he did after buying Twitter was ban a bunch of journalists (including me) for no reason. He is suppressing voices with which he disagrees and boosting those that parrot his beliefs. He regularly does that which he accuses others of doing. So when he calls others the enemies of free speech, he is telling on himself.

We have a message for Donald Trump

BENINDY: We will continue to live in hope and in righteous anger, with courage, with long- and short-range planning and with a persistence faithful to the constitution, to those we love and to our moral convictions…

The Benicia Independent joins the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in this hopeful message

The New York Times, 8 Nov 2024

Dear President-elect Trump:

In case you had any doubt, we are the American Civil Liberties Union. And we’re not moving to Canada.

So, rest assured that when you target immigrants, dissidents, and your political opponents – we will challenge you in the courts, at state legislatures, and in the streets.

Surely, you remember the landmark lawsuits we won against you on family separation, the U.S. Census, and immigrants’ rights – some of which were decided by judges you appointed.

During your last presidency, we brought 434 legal actions, including 250 lawsuits against your administration’s anti-civil liberties agenda.

We also mobilized the power of our more than 1 million card-carrying members into the streets, at airports, and in state capitals.

We’ve developed a comprehensive roadmap to defend our rights beginning on day one. We’re not new to this.

At the ACLU, we play the long game. We’ve been around for 105 years and seen 19 presidents come and go.

That’s why any attempt to roll back the nation’s civil liberties on our watch will be hard fought and met with the full power of our resistance.

Steadfast and determined to make ours a more perfect union, we remain,

The ACLU

Roger Straw: The Morning After…

Roger Straw, Benicia CA

MAGA MORNING. Here are four poems, sharing my first thoughts and struggles with this morning’s news. How are you coping with the return to power of the Donald and his backers?  See also “Looking Forward” below. – Roger Straw

MORNING AFTER (6:29 AM)

I don’t want to know.
Don’t tell me.
Dread in the morning.
I can’t sleep.

All indications we have arrived at a Fascist era,
The election all but called,
I turn off the tv.
I can’t bear to look.

Don’t tell me.
I don’t want to know.

MORE TRUMP (7:19 AM)

Sympathy doesn’t heal
Encouragement isn’t enough
How will we live in a Fascist state?

ON THE NEWS (7:32 AM)

On the news of Trump’s return
My sister in Canada sent a single word, Sad.
I replied,
Devastating.
Don’t know what to do.
Afraid.
I woke up uninformed but suspicious of the outcome
We couldn’t bear to stay awake for the tv analyses
The endless parsing of Lackawanna County
And comparisons of turnout and margins in years past
We shut off the tv and went to bed.
To bed not pretending, just not ready to deal
To bed
Maybe that’s the only place of security
In the face of impending doom.

On the news of Trump’s return
And even more so,
On the news of our nation’s willing descent into the pit of Fascism
Of my neighbor’s Take Us Back flag, victorious,
Of the loss of the all-important US Senate,
Of the marginal swing of the US House,
Of 4 more years of Presidential pouting
And posturing
And attack
And race baiting
And outright racism and misogyny and homophobia
Of losses to come, losses without number
Of dark days…
On such news, it’s hard to summon courage
To bed is not secure, to bed where dreams will tell the truth
Truth spoken, not to power, but to the darkness

Into the void we go.
The swirl, the black hole.
Tell me there’s more.

WAKE-UP CALL (8:08 AM)

Ok, so life goes on.

On the morning after we learned the truth,
The truth that we are still and again the United States of White Men,
The truth that even the threat of dictatorial power and criminality
Can’t override the fundamental fear of gender parity,
Can’t overcome the reality of racism,
On this morning after,
After our shock,
After our disbelief,
After all the twists and turns of the five stages of grief,
Life goes on.

So where does life go?
When life goes on in a turned-back America,
When life continues under fascist power,
When life plows ahead regardless…
Where is our Dr. King?
Where is our Susan B. Anthony?
Who will wake the nation?
Who will organize on campuses
And call the People to demonstrate
A vision of freedom and goodness and light?

A wake-up call
On the morning of our nation’s backslide
On the morning of the reaffirmation of sexism and white supremacy
On November 6, 2024
A wake-up call.
Who will wake us up, America?

Looking forward…
